Another Candidate for the Darwin Awards

CNN reports that 27 school children in the Phillipines are dead and another 35 are in critical condition after eating fried cassava balls from a vendor. The story is crushingly tragic, in that muted way that remote misfortunes are, and there's not much to make of it one way or another.

That said, this part is rich: "The vendor who sold the cassava balls insisted nothing was wrong with them and ate a few to prove the point. Now she, too, is in critical condition."

Ach! Schadenfreude.
