99 Programs But a Bitch Ain't One -- The Bush Budget
While everyone raves about a Social Security regime that isn't so much broken as in need of a modest tune-up, the Bush admin quietly submitted its next budget to Congress, which budget provides for 99 programs to be cut outright and another 55 to suffer major funding reductions.
The list is here and Armand, whom I owe a hat tip for the link to the program cut list, provides more detail, with other links.
Maybe Bush really is for smaller government after all.

Is it any surprise with the record deficit levels and the insistence of super high military spending? The Canadian government is in a minority situation right now, so the budget that just came out this week was meant to appease as many people as possible, it seems to have worked.
The way things are railroaded through Congress these days -- please let Social Security "reform" be the exception -- it makes me long for the days of gridlock, where a Democratic president had to fight tooth and nail to get anything out of a Republican House. Things have happened too precipitously, and with too little debate, these last five years, and there's no sign of that relenting (again, except perhaps on Social Security, where Republican congresspeople facing mid-term elections must consider how bad Bush's SS reform is polling among older voters).
Bush doesn't want a small government. He wants a government that's bigger than ever - but different in key ways from the one he inherited.
